Popes ‘not overwhelmed by tragedies’
P(ANSA) – Vatican City, April 27 – John Paul II and John XXII were “not overwhelmed by the tragedies of the 20th century,” Pope Francis said in his homily at their canonisation Sunday. “Stronger, in them, was God; stronger was their faith in Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Man and Lord of history; stronger in them God’s mercy,” Francis said.BR”They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century.BRThey experienced its tragedies but were not overwhelmed by them,” Francis said of the new popes. John lived through both world wars while John Paul had a direct experience of the second one.BRAs popes, they also had to address numerous catastrophes, wars and other sources of human suffering.BR/P
